The Monkey Army ~ Wat Pho, Bangkok
Jan 17, 2002

Whether classical dance in Laos, bass reliefs at Angkor Wat, Cambodia or these murals in Wat Pho in Bangkok, the events and characters from the Ramayana story are a wellspring of inspiration for the artists of SE Asia. Originating in India, the epic tells the story of Prince Rama's attempt to save his wife Sita, who has been kidnapped by the ten headed demon Ravanna. In his quest he is aided by the demi-god Hanuman, king of the monkeys. This detail from the famous mural in Bangkok depicts soldiers in his army.
