Mermaid ~ Shweydagon Paya, Yangon
Jan 23 2002

Children are the friendliest people all over the world and in a strange land we seem to gravitate towards them. So it is hard to deny my new found urge to affectionately ruffle kids' hair as I say hello, for here the head is sacrosanct and to touch this highest part of the body is extremely rude. Conversely, the feet are the lowest part of the body and to point them at someone is an insult. It is no great leap in thought to understand why a careless movement in a temple would be similar to entering a church and raising your middle finger. Always sit cross-legged or mermaid-style, never pointing your feet at the revered image.
