The slow boat ~ Ou river, Laos
Feb 23, 2002

Slow boat upriver is perhaps not the most comfortable way to travel. Five or six hours at a stretch squatting on tiny stools, the engine making your ears ring. It is, however, the best way to travel and I would say the same if there were air-conditioned five star yachts doing the same route. In places with more developed tourist industry I would have been sealed off from all the experiences that made the trip memorable. Instead of stopping to buy pigs we would have stopped at a souvenir shop. Instead of laughing with the Lao people when we got splashed I would have listened to an official tour guide drone over a microphone. Instead of feeling like part of the scenery I would have passed right through it.
